A Conversation Around Privilege
What are the “categories” we belong to? How do they affect our views on ourselves and those around us? This practice was born out of a conversation seeking to explore just that.
Using a familiar self-inquiry practice we explore the nature of our beliefs, why? Because our beliefs dictate our behavior.
Recent events that have taken place across the United States and throughout the world have begun to show us that although we might declare, “All men are created equal” we don’t actually believe that to be true. We may innocently turn a blind eye to human rights violations or use claims such as “we’re all sinners” or that someone is “not perfect” to gloss over real injustice. Yet these allowances are not always offered equally and while one person’s behavior can be glossed over by saying they’re “no angel”, another individual responsible for the same behavior quickly becomes labeled “a thug”.
I’m interested in what compels us to make these distinctions.
In this workshop, we invite attendees to bring their most honest, vulnerable self to the table and utter the words they thought they might never speak. Let's explore the things we've heard as children, things we learned through mass media, and of course the personal experiences that have helped shape our perspectives.
When we discover the underlying beliefs that created and reinforce our view of the world, then we gain the power to change them and ultimately shift how we engage and interact with the world.
In this workshop, two friends Danielle and Edie offer up their individual experiences with privilege as real-life examples of how choice, opportunity, and responsibility shape the course of our lives. Join us on November 12th at 5:30 p.m. for Playing with Privilege: Entitlement Unleashed.
