Perspectives: Robin Layton

At just 24 years of age Robin Layton was named one of the eight most talented photographers in the country by LIFE Magazine. Her career as a photojournalist has spanned 25 years. During that time she’s turned her camera’s lens towards people on the street as well as politicians & personalities among them Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Anniston, and plenty of pooches. It was the iconic photograph of Seattle Mariner, Ken Griffey Jr. from the 1995 American League playoffs, that garnered Robin a Pulitzer Prize nomination. Her latest project is a book of photography called “The Lake”, spectacular images of Lake Washington taken over many years.

We were honored to have Robin speak at our event "The Power of Personal Projects” and now we are excited to have her perspective during these uncertain times.

What are you learning about yourself right now?

That even in this crazy time, I’m still staying positive about the future, my business and that everything will be alright. This is a time for faith. This too shall pass.

What new learning/habits will you carry forward?

I’ve always been a grateful person, but will even be more in tune about things: hugging someone, going to a restaurant, going to a party, etc. Also, I’ve always been “germ aware,” but will even be more so now, even when this virus is gone!

How are you juggling business, family and personal time from home?

I’m working on projects and ideas for my business I’ve always wanted to do but didn’t have time for. Creating new art pieces with objects that have been in my workshop for a while. My family lives out of state so we keep in touch by text, phone and FaceTime. For personal time, I’ve been walking and riding my bike, trying to keep my body moving! Also, I’ve been taking time to reflect on my life and what I really want to accomplish in the future.

Do you have a mantra you are living with?

Being grateful for all things, big and small.  This is a time to go inward. To look inside and reflect. This too shall pass. Keeping the faith that everything will be okay!

What has been your guilty pleasure during this time?

Baking cookies and eating what I want. (hence the moving the body part : )

What creature comforts or elements of normal life do you miss the most?

I miss hanging out with friends, going out to dinner, and mostly TRAVEL! We had to cancel a trip to Maui last month that we were really looking forward to. But hopefully we can go this fall.
