What to Expect

They expected an adventure.

They didn’t expect it to last 12 years.

In 2013, Debbie and Michael Campbell sold their home and most of their possessions and set out to see if they could live around the world for roughly the same cost as retiring in Seattle. They expected an adventure. They didn’t expect it to last 12 years, take them to 95 countries and more than 300 Airbnbs, or teach them so much about how they wanted to live.

Debbie will share some of the stories behind Twelve Lessons from Twelve Years of Travel—and the larger lessons that came from stepping far outside the life they knew. They’ll talk about choosing experiences over possessions, becoming comfortable with being “the foreigner,” discovering they were braver than they thought, learning to stay flexible when plans fell apart, and remaining curious well beyond the age when we’re sometimes expected to settle into familiar routines.

They’ll also explore the less glamorous side of a 12-year adventure: navigating illness and emergencies far from home, living together 24/7, managing money, relying on strangers, and figuring out when it was finally time to stop.

And perhaps most importantly, they’ll talk about what came next: returning to the Pacific Northwest, creating a home again after years of carrying everything they owned in two suitcases, and discovering that adventure doesn’t have to end simply because the journey does.

It’s a conversation about travel—but more than that, it’s about reinvention, resilience, curiosity, letting go, and the re-creating a life that continues to surprise you.
