What’s your one thing?
When we think about the well-being of the planet and climate change, it’s easy to forget that every day we make an impact on our environment with the trash we produce. It can seem insignificant to throw away that one plastic bag from the grocery store or that one carton of milk—but it adds up quickly!
More than 50% of all plastic is single-use. So once you're done with it, the plastic ends up in landfills. Since the beginning of the pandemic, plastic packaging has increased by 250-300%. Even more shocking—only 10% of all plastic ever manufactured has been recycled. So, what can we do about it?
It can be as simple as eco-friendly swaps and DIYs. Zero-waste activist and blogger Bettina Grab opened our eyes to the possibilities with an informative presentation on how to eliminate trash and live a zero-waste life. You can watch Hacking Zero Waste: Creative Strategies for Eliminating Trash from Your Life here.
Not all trash is equal! Check out the chart Bettina showed in her presentation:
In 2017 alone, 267.8 million tons of garbage was generated. Can you imagine what those statistics will look like at the end of 2021? Let’s lower the amount of waste we produce!
Try one or all of these awesome zero-waste hacks at home:
1. Use reusable shopping bags
2. Buy unpackaged fruit & vegetables
3. Wear a reusable mask
4. Use soap and shampoo bars
5. Order from online zero waste shops like Zero (groceries) or Fillgood (household products)
Just changing one thing can make a positive impact. What's your one thing?
