More than "A Bad Headache": Migraines from Diagnosis to Treatment (Virtual)

More than 40 million Americans are affected by migraine or severe headache disorders, disproportionately affecting adult women.

Lisa Kleiman is no stranger to this common, disabling neurological disease, characterized by painful, debilitating headache attacks. She will be in conversation with Dr. Nina Riggins, Neurologist and Headache Specialist, on April 7 a.m. PT. Lisa will share her story with Migraine disorder, how she got diagnosed and eventually got help.

Dr. Riggins, also the Director of UC San Diego Health Headache Center, will explain what causes migraine disease and migraine attacks, common triggers, how migraines are diagnosed, how to find the right health care provider, latest treatment options for migraine disease, how to navigate insurance, how to best manage (and prevent) migraines, and more. She will also detail how recent breakthroughs in treatment options help many to reduce their severity and frequency of migraines.

About Host Lisa Kleiman: Principal and coach at Speaktopia, and headache/migraine disorders patient and advocate.

About Nina Riggins, MD, PhD: Dr. Nina Riggins is a Neurologist, Headache Specialist and the Director of the Headache and Traumatic Brain Injury Center at the University of California San Diego. She is especially passionate about working on challenging cases with the UCSD neurology team to help patients return to a high-functioning and pain-free state.

Riggins' research investigates causes and treatments for headaches. Her studies of specific therapies include Botox injections, a new class of drugs known as calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonists as well as a procedure called a sphenopalatine ganglion block. She is also studying the possible relationship between migraines and cochlear implants – devices used to restore a sense of sound to people with severe hearing loss. Riggins is also a member of the American Headache Society and the American Academy of Neurology.
