The Upshot of Learning Something New

They say to learn something new every day. It keeps your brain moving, increases your confidence, and improves your mental health. Well, I'm learning something new AND very detailed. I'm moving my body, my feet and challenging my brain as I learn a choreographed dance to a fast-paced and very fun song: I Need You! by Jon Batiste.

I knew this would be a challenge when I said YES to participate in Seattle Dances, a fundraiser for Plymouth Housing. But I also said YES to myself. I have long had a passion for dancing that I always put on the back burner. Over the last month, I've been going through the routine with my professional dance partner and practicing on my own. The experience has been an absolute joy, but also a series of ups and downs – an important part of any journey.

What I didn’t realize is that I haven’t danced my way into learning for a long time. Here are some of my takeaways from the last few weeks:

  • It’s important to have the right partner. In this case, I was paired with professional dancer Andy Howe from Impact Ballroom and Century Ballroom. He’s a fantastic teacher and very technical which has made learning fun.

  • Learning to dance is challenging. It’s sort of like learning a different language but with your body. Note: Did you know that dance is the one activity that is so good for the mind that it significantly reduces dementia risk?

  • You have to experience the lows in order to appreciate the highs. In this case, getting all the steps, arm movements and body parts to make sense together. I have laughed and cried during this experience. You gotta feel it all!

  • Learning to dance is a literal step-by-step process – one that builds confidence as you move through the routine. That goes for any situation where you are learning something new and different.

  • I am definitely experiencing my passion. I've always been a very active person – biking, skiing, walking, running — but with dance, it is a new true love!

  • And, finally, I’m having the time of my life. Why: because it is just plain fun and complete joy. I'm pushing myself and raising money for a fabulous cause - housing for the homeless. A perfect combo.

The lesson I'm learning from this experience is to live into your passion. Challenge yourself. Put yourself out there. Don’t hold back. And embrace ALL of the emotions of learning something new. That is to live fully!
